January Newsletter!

Hello and Happy New Year to all of our beautiful Bliss yogi's! It has been a fast and furious month with LOTS of exciting events and changes. First and foremost, I am pleased and happy to say that I, Jennifer Yan, am the NEW owner of Bliss Yoga as of January 1, 2016! It was not on my radar to purchase Bliss Yoga but now that I have bought the studio, I am really looking forward to seeing where we will forge ahead and where our growth will take us as a community!

Speaking of exciting news and events, we started the New Year with a FIRST ever Global Mala event for Bliss Yoga. We did 108 Sun Salutations to ring in the New Year. It took over 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete all 108 Sun Salutations. It was exciting to see 24 yogi's all in sync with their breath and movements. And, we were also able to raise over $200 for this event. We sent the donation to 109 World and their mission to provide clean water to the village of Playa Gigante in Nicaragua.

This Saturday on January 23rd, Bliss Yoga instructor, Ashley Evrard, will be conducting a special class entitled "Butts and Guts" that will get your heart pumping and will focus on the problematic areas such as the glutes, inner thighs, cores and arms. This special class is just a sneak preview of what Ashley will be offering in Feb. *Stay tuned for an exciting 8 week program that Ashley will teach to help tighten, firm and sculpt our muscles, while promoting weight loss and stimulating our metabolisms.  

The end of this month provides another exciting opportunity to participate in a donation based community yoga class at Bliss Yoga. This time the proceeds will help benefit people right here in our very own community. The donations raised will go towards Class 16-08 ( a group of young men and women student pilots based out of Columbus Air Force Base) who are undergoing a 53 week program to become the next class of pilots for the United States Air Force. This community yoga event will be an ALL-Levels yoga class designed to meet the needs of ALL fitness levels so be sure to come out on Friday Jan 29th at 6-7:00PM at Bliss Yoga to participate and help these aspiring young student pilots!

Also, there will be some new changes and additions to the February classes! We are very pleased to share that we will offer a KIDS 6 week yoga program! Session 1 will begin Feb 5, 2016 and will run through March 11, 2016. The classes will be held on Friday mornings at 9:30-10:15AM and will be guided by Anna Cotman. This exciting new program will be for children ages 2-5 years of age. 

Another exciting addition to the February schedule will be a 'BYOB' yoga class. This class is designed for mothers who want to work out but aren't quite ready to leave their children with a sitter or at a daycare program. If you are a mom and you have a young baby between the ages of 6 weeks through 6 months who are not yet mobile then this class is for you! You can bring your little one to class and let the baby stay in their infant carrier right next to your yoga mat or allow your baby to lay down on a blanket while you practice yoga. What happens if your baby begins to fuss? No worries! Our instructor, Kelly Wala, who will be leading this class is very understanding and supportive to the needs of motherhood, will allow you to tend to your baby and you will also gain the support and understanding of the other moms who are sharing the class with you. After class, stay for 30 minutes of fellowship with other moms and discuss the joys and struggles of raising children over a nice cup of tea and coffee! This class will be offered on Tuesday mornings from 10:45-11:45AM with 30 minutes of fellowship from 11:45-12:15PM.

We, at Bliss yoga, are excited about all the new offerings and programs that are developing right now (there will be even more workshops and new classes shared over the next couple of months as well!) If there is anything we can do to better serve your needs, let us know! Monday Evening New Class Line Up: Meet Your Instructors!

It's a NEW Year and there have been some exciting NEW changes to our schedule too! If you haven't noticed, Kelly Wala, will be teaching the Monday Vinyasa Flow classes at 5:30PM. Kelly is one of our highly sought out instructors who normally only teaches during our weekday, morning classes but now she is able to include one weeknight into her schedule and we couldn't be more excited to have her as a permanent fixture in the 5:30PM Monday time slot!

Kelly has been teaching at Bliss Yoga since May of 2014. She is from Columbus, Mississippi and is a wife to Dody and a mom to three children. Kelly says that she finally found herself when she found the yoga mat. Yoga just clicked with her. Kelly says that yoga has helped her through depression, through trauma, and that yoga has also helped her in overcoming (sometimes crippling) insecurity. Kelly knows that yoga has the transformative power to help anyone and as a teacher, she wants to guide you through your yoga practice so that you can find the strength and steadiness to overcome any of your life's challenges that you face. If you have not had the chance to take one of Kelly's classes, you should come check it out! You won't leave disappointed!

2016! A New Year, A New Owner and a New Event!

It is 2016! A New Year and NEW ownership for Bliss Yoga! We started out the New Year by partnering up with 109 World and their mission to help get a clean watering system for the people of Playa Gigante in Nicaragua. We did that by participating in our first ever Global Mala and practiced 108 Sun Salutations! The main event was held in New York City and was live streamed via a projection system at Bliss Yoga so that we could practice alongside House of Jai Yoga Studio as Bee Bosnak led us through the 108 Sun Salutations. It took over 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete the 108 Sun Salutations. It was an amazing experience and Bliss Yoga was able to raise and donate over $200 to 109 World for their water mission. Clean water is essential to life. Everyday in rural communities and poor urban centers, hundreds of millions of people suffer from a lack of safe, clean water. So, together we made a small difference! Thank you to everyone who came out and supported this wonderful event!

A New Chapter Awaits

An exciting new chapter is about to begin at Bliss Yoga! Starting January 1st, Bliss will have a new owner! This means new ideas, a fresh perspective, and we get to continue to GROW! 

The current owner, Marissa will be leaving Columbus in January to head to Arkansas and eventually Germany where her husband, Michael, will fly C-130J's. While they have an exciting journey ahead and she could not be more pleased to hand operations off to Jennifer, leaving Bliss is bittersweet.

A note from Marissa:

The past 8 months of running Bliss Yoga has been the most rewarding whirlwind of learning, growing, building relationships and excitement! As my first opportunity to run a business I was thrilled to have the support and encouragement of so many of our friends and family. I am excited to say Bliss has grown tremendously in the last 8 months and I know under Jenn's leadership it will only continue to do so. I will sincerely miss our community of yogis and the wonderful people I have had the honor of getting to know but feel blessed to have been allowed such a rewarding and lesson-filled experience.

Jennifer Yan will be taking the reins as of January 1st, 2016. She is also a military spouse and her husband, Matt, is an instructor pilot at Columbus Air Force Base. Jennifer has been teaching yoga at Bliss Yoga Studio since May and is a 200 hour RYT certified in Vinyasa Flow where she studied under the guidance of Merri Benham of Flip Your Dog Yoga School in Gainesville, Georgia. Jennifer has practiced yoga in studios all around the world in places such as Cambodia, Singapore, Korea, Tokyo, Peru, Hawaii and, of course, right here in Columbus, Mississippi. Jennifer is an avid long distance sports enthusiast and has an incredible vision for the future of Bliss Yoga. 

A note from Jenn: 

What do I like you ask? There are many things that I like! I like puppies and cupcakes with sprinkles. I also like sea turtles and rainbows. I like to enter crazy endurance races and rock climb. I like to quilt and I like to cook. I like to read books and I REALLY like a good cup of coffee. 

And then there are things that I am passionate about which include: enjoying nature, music, art and travel.

But, what I have a HEART for are: God, my family, people, yoga and stand up paddleboarding (SUP).

My goal is to debunk the stereotype of yoga and make yoga accessible to everyone. I want Bliss Yoga Studio to become a place of community where authenticity and love thrives. I know in my heart that God gave me the platform of teaching yoga so that I could spread His love on to my students. And most importantly, I want to get the people of Columbus out on the water for some yoga on a stand up paddleboard so that everyone can enjoy God's amazing handiwork and SUPyoga outside!

New Schedule Starts July 1st!

New classes, new time slots, new teachers! We are always striving to offer the BEST schedule of classes to our students. We have made some adjustments, added additional evening times as well as a few new classes! Take a look below and start penciling them into your calendar! As always, we appreciate your feedback! Let us know what you are excited about and what you would still like to see!

We also want to say a special welcome back to our instructor Katlin Hartz who just returned from an 8 week, 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training program in Colorado! We are so excited to have her back at Bliss Yoga and know her students will be welcoming her with open arms as well!

International Yoga Day!

The UN has declared the first ever International Yoga Day June 21st! Yogis all over the WORLD will be gathering to celebrate this day by doing yoga together! We are excited to offer a FREE Community Yoga Class at Bliss Yoga at 3pm on Sunday, June 21st. 

Mats, water, and all other equipment included. We would love to see you there! Bring a friend and help us spread the word about Yoga and the benefits to the mind, body and spirit one can experience in their practice!

Summer Events!

We have so many exciting events happening this summer! See below for full details, and like us on Facebook for the most up to date information.

  • First Friday Live! will be CANCELED in JUNE and JULY. Instead we will be holding our Thursday 6:30pm Vinyasa Flow class at the Riverwalk to the live music being played at the Sounds of Summer concerts! The dates are as follows: 6/4, 6/18, 7/9 and 7/23. All other Thursday classes will be held per usual at the studio. There is no additional cost for these evenings- just come for class and enjoy the live music! (Don't forget your bug spray!)
  • MASTER CLASS | Saturday 6/13 at 9:00am |  Instead of our usual Power Hour Yoga class on the 13th, we will be having an AMAZING Master Class with out-of-town guest Merri Benham of Flip Your Dog Yoga located in Gainsville, GA. Open to all levels. This is an event you do NOT want to miss! $20 per person, $10 for members. Check out Merri's website to learn more about her and her yoga journey: www.doinyoga.net
  • PINTS & POSES! Saturday 6/27 2-3:30pm | We are SO excited to offer this event this summer! Join us for an All Levels yoga class and then enjoy a cold one on us afterwards! More details to come! $15 per person, $5 for members

  • GLOWGA! Thursday 7/16 8:00pm | Glowga = Glow in the Dark Yoga! Wear neon colors, glow sticks and glow in the dark paint to this one hour, all levels, black light class! $15 per person, $5 for members.

All Settled In...

We are finally moved into the new space and enjoying a fresh start! The new location is more centrally located in downtown, offers wood flooring, a fresh coat of blue paint, and a nice sitting area for students! Take a look:

In Progress...

The new space is coming right along! The walls have a fresh coat of beautiful light blue paint, the flooring is going in, new bathroom appliances and more coming soon! There is something so exciting about seeing a space be transformed and looking forward to the finished product. 

In many ways yoga is similar, we watch ourselves transform as we progress from class to class. The difference is we are not working towards a "finished product". We are making small steps towards a better self. Our little accomplishments in every class are evidence we are making progress: nailing crow pose for the first time, not using our knees in our chaturanga because we have built our arm strength, going deeper in our warrior poses than we ever thought possible, or even laying in Savasana in peaceful meditation without checking of our to-do list in our heads... these may seem simple from the outside, but they feel WONDERFUL as we experience them on our mats. We may not ever have a pretty "finished" product to show for it, but Yoga is a journey, not a destination.
